ABSTRACT

A city is made up of many different neighbourhoods and most neighbourhoods have a certain image and reputation. Most people have heard about and associate certain images with the Marais in Paris, Williamsburg in the New York borough of Brooklyn or London’s Brick Lane. Berlin is no exception. Most people choose a certain ‘Kiez’, the Berlin designation for a small-scale neighbourhood. A student would rather move to Neukölln or Kreuzberg than to Prenzlauer Berg, which is known as the place for young families that those without children try to avoid. Neukölln and Kreuzberg are hip, Wedding is the underestimated district with cheap rents, Wilmersdorf and Charlottenburg are more bourgeois.
