ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about social reality that is continually negotiated through the interaction process. The symbolic construction of reality requires consistent daily support of the mainstream media and a parallel system of curricular and co-curricular school activities. The chapter discusses the public television and public radio that are used to be pretty good sources of information because they were at one time primarily funded by donations from average citizens and government funds. This chapter also explains that the people of the United States and of the world in general need to democratically create and control their own economy and their own media and airwaves, or they will continue to let the media and, hence, the economy, control them. The United States public tends to be confused about this issue because over time people in positions of power and wealth have used the media and educational systems to deliberately mesh capitalism and democracy together as being one and the same.
