ABSTRACT

In the dynamic arena of migration, social work plays a central part in immigrant settlement and integration. Continual capacity building for integration work is important for the profession. There are some task areas which, if situated at the heart of practice with migrants, would put professional practice into the dynamic flow of integration work. The positioning of social work in organized welfare means that areas of practice interventions are structured around a matrix of categories relating to different entitlements and intervention patterns. Critique of culturalization is not to try to deny the importance of categorization which in its generic sense is fundamental to social organization. Lundy and van Wormer point out that Professional social work ethics and values require competence in policy advocacy and social change strategies, as well as a radical approach to individual, family and group practice'. These are valuable in professional use, to emphasize the seriousness of situations of social vulnerability.
