ABSTRACT

The focus of the book’s remaining chapters is more deeply on the process of making sense. In this chapter, I shall focus on the notion of the friction that can operate between the expectations listeners may bring to a track, on the basis of normative assumptions, and a track’s frequent refusal to conform to those assumptions. Prior to addressing this, however, I need to make some preparatory remarks on interpretation itself, and on the assumptions it is necessary to bring to the act of listening.
