ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I discuss the key contributions of this book, focuses on energy transitions, modernity, sustainability and their interactions. The first part of this chapter elaborates on the key argument of this book, that is, energy and modernity are intimately related and cannot be separated. The second part of the chapter argues that sustainability needs to be seen as part of this energy-modernity dialectic – rather than opposed or outside of it – in order to move beyond superficial and discursive sustainability claims. The final part of the chapter broadens the scope to see what these propositions mean for a possible critical geography of energy, drawing on some of the key concepts that featured in this book.
