ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a sense of belonging which arises out of shared beliefs, viewpoints or interests. It explores religion, social justice and sport. Religious beliefs often make little or no sense to outsiders. Within most of the world's major religions, including Christianity, Islam and Judaism, there are recognised different forms of religious expression, which include different emphases, beliefs or practices. A manifestation of religious beliefs is a desire for social justice which plays out in social or political action. Social justice however is not just the domain of the religious, with many people of non-religious persuasions just as passionately involved in the quest for social justice, and it being an inherent part of their own spirituality. Sport is also credited with creating social cohesion within and between communities. Sporting events also frequently bring together communities or nations between whom there may be a degree of enmity, in what it is hoped will be friendly contest.
