ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book highlights cultural studies, sociology, feminist theory, leisure studies and sport management, interview material and Adele's own narratives of participation in roller derby. The book explores written roller derby as competitive sport, as creative leisure practice and as site through which femininity is embodied in its multiplicity. In Blackman's theorisation of affect, she raises an important question one that resonates with the book. The question might be reframed, instead asking about how to enable competition while still acknowledging roller derby as an affective multiplicity with different versions, ways of playing, attitudes and visions for the sport. Rather than attempt to reconcile them, our argument throughout the book has been to embrace them to work with power in its multiplicity, rather than against it.
