ABSTRACT

Trey Grayson was just thirty-one years old when he was elected Kentucky's Secretary of State in 2002, making him the youngest Secretary of State in the country at the time. Grayson has used his youth to his advantage, building a strong base of support among college students and young professionals, promoting his candidacy via new media outlets such as Facebook and MySpace. He also updated his office's website to include numerous online resources, while making it available in six different languages. Grayson has truly used his pulpit as Secretary in ways that go beyond traditional work. He has become a national voice advocating for reform to the political parties' system of conducting presidential primaries. Grayson has also developed an eighty-five page manual on running for office called 'Declaring Your Candidacy', demystifying the process for those with an interest in becoming elected public servants.
