ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a review of the methodology of research, which consists of five major activity stages. During the early development of the strategic management theories, scholars emphasized the normative aspect of business knowledge and were chiefly interested in identifying and developing the 'best practices' that were useful for managers. The chapter synthesizes the literature on strategic management in SMEs and introduces a dynamic model of strategic management in entrepreneurial medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The literature review shows that, a number of models have been proposed for strategic management in SME. Strategic management itself consists of four basic elements: environmental scanning, strategy formulation, strategy implementation, and evaluation and control. Environmental scanning is the monitoring, evaluating, and dissemination of information, regarding the external and internal environment, to key people within the corporation. The chapter describes the data collection techniques, questionnaire construction and survey process. It discusses data analysis methods and the statistical techniques employed.
