ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a study and analysis of sustainable governance in hybrid organizations exemplified by water companies from Denmark, the UK, the US and South Africa. The water companies face various challenges in getting to the same level as private organizations in terms of philanthropy and corporate giving for societal purposes. Decision making in organizations is tied to stakeholder relationships in all types of business models whether it is hybrid organizations as found in the Danish water companies or other kinds of business models. Corporate reports were also shown to induce micro-changes to the organization in their everyday life regarding its responsibilities towards society and sustainable governance. The comparison of texts, visual images and observations of the creation of a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report showed several ambiguities based on the incommensurability especially between the managerial perspective within the reports' texts and the multiplicity of organizational cultures, which have to be negotiated to fit the format of these texts.
