ABSTRACT

The International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) Fellows (2006) state that a basic property of a system is its function. A function is a task, action, or activity performed to achieve a desired outcome. This principle applies to any system, including a motorcycle, as explained above by Pirsig (1974). This chapter will show how the functional architecture of the aircraft system becomes the basis for all aircraft SE analyses. It will show that the functional architecture is, to a given level, valid for all aircraft.
