ABSTRACT

This Chapter speaks about psychometric testing. It is a term that covers a variety of assessment techniques. Psychological tests cover three distinct aspects of people's future behaviour such as aptitude, personality and attitude. The first psychometric instruments were basically aptitude tests designed to measure the concept of intelligence. The aptitudes most commonly tested are different aspects of critical reasoning. The fields most commonly tested are verbal and numerical abilities, since they are core elements of most graduate jobs. Leonard D. Goodstein and Richard I. Lanyon's definition of personality is: the enduring characteristics of the person that are significant for interpersonal behaviour. According to a UK online recruitment consultancy, a recent study said that 87 per cent of employers now use psychometric tests when recruiting. In the non-medical field one of the early assessments was the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator which is a personality test designed to assist a person in identifying their personality preferences.
