ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book attempts to join multiple safety and performance view points by taking a different perspective from the beginning. It deals with a team operations and safety performance system used in United States Marine Corps aviation operations, known as Crew Resource Management (CRM). The book describes the design of work systems to include practical ways of integrating technology, team performance strategies, planning, learning, and risk mitigation throughout the organizational system, so that a balance between risk management, safety, and performance may be achieved. It emphasizes work planning and execution using a synergistic approach, where safety and performance goals are inextricably linked, requiring a concerted effort on the part of organizational leadership to clearly define performance goals and reconcile them with acceptable levels of risk.
