ABSTRACT

Old Cairo is a unique context that represents a special structure of the home, both in its public and private spaces. Domestic spaces are dynamic in nature and keep developing and changing according to the need and situation. The proposed spectrum emerged as scale of privacy with open public and ultimate private spheres at its extremes. Instead of using the binary categorisation of the private and public spheres, homes need to be understood through a refined spectrum of social spheres that governs their socio-spatial order and organisation. Social sphere is a notion that has been extensively, but implicitly, used to describe human activities, habitual practices and rituals, especially those taking place in groups. The boundary between the hawari and old city public sphere or between the old city and the outside world defines the hierarchical order of the social spheres.
