ABSTRACT

Ed showed up in Chapter 1. He helped me through the issue I was struggling with regarding memory. Using an example of a memory about playing with a coat-hanger as a child, he pointed out that although memories are hugely contrived they are nonetheless authenticated through emotion. The memories are not real in the sense, as with the coat-hanger, that the events may not have happened to you, but the emotions that encompass the memories are incontrovertible. During our supper that night, my conversation with Ed turns to the ways we get caught up in categories. Unlike the affective component of memories, he sees categories of meaning as hugely controvertible.
