ABSTRACT

When Thomas Laqueur (1992) argues that the ‘biological facts’ of motherhood and fatherhood are not ‘given’ but come into being as science progresses and identities assume cultural significance through political struggle, he is suggesting the same kind of politics that Michel de Certeau and his colleagues (1998, 256) argue when they champion the “obscure heroes of the ephemeral.” There is always a struggle between everyday cultural and a science that frames the world in a particular way.
