ABSTRACT

YET further on, after leaving the island of Çunda but not the sea thereof on the South-western side are many islands, both great and small, among which is one very great which they call Jaoa,l the inhabitants whereof are Heathen in the inland regions but Moors in the sea-havens, who possess very great towns and villages, yet all are subject to the' Heathen King, a very great Lord whom they call Pateudra 2 who dwells in the interior. Some who rise up against him he subdues again forthwith. And some folk bear a great hatred to the Portuguese, while others wish for peace and amity with them.
