ABSTRACT

In the previous chapters we have defined technology (Chapter 2) and gained a first understanding of the importance of technology for companies and nations (Chapter 3). In this chapter we focus on the aspect of transfer. We introduce three different theories explaining the transfer of technology:

First, you will become acquainted with Nonaka’s theory of technology conversion (Section 4.1). This theory identifies four different patterns of technology transfer for explicit and tacit technology.

Secondly, you will learn about absorptive capacity (Section 4.2). This concept explains the capability of a firm or country to recognize and assimilate new technology.

Thirdly, we will introduce a social network perspective on technology transfer, focusing on the social relationships between individuals as an influencing factor on the search and transfer of technologies (Section 4.3).
