ABSTRACT

One of the most misleading terms applied to organizations that operate in the cultural sector is that they are ‘not-for-profit’. An organization that failed financially would not last very long, yet too often what is meant by ‘not-for-profit’ is ‘expecting-to-make-a-loss’. The losses are made up by public subsidy, private generosity, or people working for next to nothing because they believe so strongly in what they do. We don't want people who work in culture and the arts to make a loss. We want to them to create a success.
