ABSTRACT

The previous chapter focussed on the development of Dracula tourism in socialist Romania. In this chapter I examine in more detail one of the most significant aspects of Dracula tourism during the socialist period: the search for Castle Dracula. This castle is a key element of Bram Stoker’s novel. Jonathan Harker’s journey to Transylvania ends at the castle where he is received by Count Dracula. It is from here that Dracula departs for England, leaving Harker to his fate. At the end of the novel, Dracula fees from London to his castle, pursued by Van Helsing and his committee where, in the story’s climax, he is finally killed.
