ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests that sex therapists have the power to create radical spaces in which all people can work towards being free from oppression and are able to access their erotic selves. It suggests that work with marginalized clients needs to include an understanding of the ways in which intersecting oppressions operate. Maintaining transparency in a therapeutic context is arguably always valuable, but it feels imperative when working with marginalized and oppressed populations. Maintaining transparency and naming systemic and individual oppressions helps to create a safe space for clients be open curious about their sexuality. One of the most fundamental and important ways to maintain transparency in a therapeutic context is to provide education for our clients about the ways in which power and oppression work in the world, in our clients’ lives, and in the sex therapy office.
