ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces a sexual history form that is a consent based information gathering tool that we use to aid in the process of creating a dialogic environment in the therapeutic setting. It discusses the idea of “exploratory experiences” versus “orgasmic experiences” and how it can feel good to start out with the intention to sexually explore with each other without being orgasm focused. The sexual history form was developed by Jassy Timberlake, the director of Northampton Sex Therapy Associates, and Shannon Sennott. This sexual history form continues to evolve and grow to support therapists in aiding clients in finding new meanings. The sexual history questionnaire is meant to be a guiding tool for clinicians to consensually begin the process of naming that which is often unspoken or unnamed for clients who are erotically marginalized. In the dialogic tradition the practice is understood as “talking about talking about it”.
