ABSTRACT

A client’s communities are a good place to start helping them find the support that they need. Clients who have had little to no experience of marginalization have rarely had to sort out when and how to come out and to help their communities understand their position. Online communities like FetLife provide social networking opportunities. Other things to look for are online communities that are closed and have moderators. Clinicians can support clients by helping them identify supports within their family or communities or help them build new system of supports. Including participation of family and communities can take many clinical forms. Working with individual clients including family and communities can mean holding the possibility for clients during individual work or including clients’ support people in session. As with all clinical interventions the inclusion of participation of family and communities needs to happen in a way and at a pace that feel authentic for each client.
