ABSTRACT

This chapter utilises the framing of practicing allyship as opposed to being an ally with intentionality, stemming from radical queer politics. Mirroring back language is a key practice in active allyship with erotically marginalized clients. A principal tenet of allyship in working with erotically marginalized people is that the clinician is not an expert on their client’s experience of gender, sexuality, relationships, or sexual practices. A clear stance of both allyship and preemptive radical inclusion is to believe that every person is the expert of their own identity and experience. A critical part of the practice of allyship for clinicians working with erotically marginalized clients is to conceptualize their work using a transfeminist lens. The process of investigating where prejudices might arise in the therapeutic work for the therapist is critical to being able to honor erotically marginalized clients in their fullest and most authentic experience.
