ABSTRACT

A guaranteed income will encourage recipients to find local employment, especially if a national commitment were to be made to infrastructure repair, which could create labor-intensive jobs suitable for former manufacturing workers, with minimal additional training. Working-age men and women want jobs rather than handouts. Within long-neglected communities, these jobs should come to willing workers, not the other way around. Jobs will also be waiting in long-neglected fields like social services. As always, some jobs will pay more than others, but always with the guaranteed minimum. A guaranteed income will help provide the freedom to choose appealing work. A guaranteed income could also provide meaningful work in clean energy production. A study at the University of Massachusetts concluded that at least 1.7 million jobs could be generated by a commitment to wind- and solar-powered renewable energy, about three times as many as in the fossil fuel industry.
