ABSTRACT
In the early twentieth century, women were fighting for control of their bodies and for the preservation of their families. They managed to drum up a charge of "public nuisance". Margaret Sanger was a strong advocate for women's rights, a socialist, a union activist, author of the feminist magazine The Woman Rebel, and notorious for affairs with several men, including author H. G. Wells. Sanger vowed to help every woman become "the absolute mistress of her own body". Drunken Husbands On October 28, 1919 Congress passed the Volstead Act, leading to the 18th Amendment and Prohibition in America. The disparagement of women goes well beyond the levels of higher education: The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that women earn just 80 percent of men's pay. Income disparities have worsened since the recession, with only about one-fifth of new jobs going to women.
