beautiful,articulate,passionatelyinvolvedinpolitics,and
livingwithconfusingfreedom.Butthoughonecanseehow
"DianaoftheCrossways•wasagoodshorthandforsuchan
anomalyasMaudGonnemusthavebeentocontemporaryeyes,
itistrulydizzyingtoseearealradicalorganizercompared
withanovelheroinewhowindsupmarriedtoanEnglishmin-
generationsbetweenDiana'sprototype,CarolineNorton,grand-
daughterofSheridan,broughtupinWindsorCastleandliving
alwaysamongtheEnglisharistocracy,makingherwaybyvirtue
ofherbeautyandcharm,anddespiteherpassionandintelli-
gence,andYeats'beloved,formidable,industrioussix-foot
fleshandbloodwoman.DianaoftheCrosswayswaspublished
