ABSTRACT

This essay continues the exploration that began with the critique of cognitivism. Its goal

is to examine the continuities that thick holism offers as sensations become perceptions

and movements become perfected, acquiring richer meanings. The performative activi-

ties under study best showcase this intimate continuity of normatively laden thinking-

in-movement from the ground up and from the sky down, so to speak. In the most

admirable cases, performers execute with seemingly unrivaled and exemplary skillful flu-

ency. One fancies they are able, like Chinese sage Liezi, to ride the wind. What sort of

process results in the ability to ride the wind-we imagine much as legendary Kelly

Slater surfs the waves-with aplomb and immaculate cool?
