ABSTRACT

The neurobiology of trauma includes the neurobiology of psychological torture. There are many different theoretical models in the research on the neurobiology of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and reviewing them goes beyond the scope of this chapter. Nearly twenty-five years ago, Saporta and van der Kolk (1992) published a review that integrated clinical, ethological and experimental data that continues to be the main reference text on the subject. Here we choose to focus on two main models of trauma: the fear model and the memory/information processing model.
