From the analyst’s point of view, money, like humour in analysis or orgasm in bed, is connected to the deepest roots of personality, of temperament.
Money serves to keep the psychoanalyst alive. This presupposes that the money he earns gives him access to that without which life would be bland and his work impossible: the superfluous. This means that he has to be well-paid.
