ABSTRACT

Simple playthings that allow children to feel and experience, to act and represent, and to think and recognise.

(Froebel, cited in Brosterman 1997: 51)

Block play is an integral part of all Froebelian early years settings. The wooden modular ‘unit’ and ‘hollow’ blocks which are used today are larger versions of Froebel’s ‘gifts’, boxed sets of blocks, divided in mathematically precise ways which Froebel designed for his kindergartens (see Chapter 5).
