ABSTRACT
The chapter commences with background information on the development of the London Docklands in the eighties. It demonstrates how and why the Docklands Community Poster Project came into being, and the principles on which it was founded, with particular mention of the means through which community representatives collaborated with artists. The work of this time included large-scale photo-murals containing imagery created through montaged black and white photographs that changed to reveal unfolding narratives. Other initiatives outlined include the People’s Armadas to Parliament and travelling exhibitions culminating in a Docklands Roadshow. The organisation was also involved in the design of the People’s Plan for the Royal Docks, an initiative led by local people and supported by the Greater London Council’s Popular Planning Unit, which is still widely used as a model for community-led planning.
