ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces some key elements that help to make Shakespeare's Globe what it is: a playground for performance possibilities. Shakespeare's Globe reminds that someone in a theatre, but that doesn't mean that he/her won't get completely immersed in the storytelling or feel an integral part of that world. The Globe celebrates playmaking, and the theatre confronts he/her with the lack of anonymity. It is extraordinary in the most literal sense of the word. At Shakespeare's Globe he/her will notice that the stage space is decorated extensively. Due to the repertory system employed by Elizabethan theatre companies, we know that the stage space would have remained the same regardless of which play was to be performed. Aside from the Globe. The world on stage echoes the surrounding world; it is a microcosm within the macrocosm: Shakespeare's world at Shakespeare's Globe. In addition to serving as a microcosm, the stage at Shakespeare's Globe has distinct spatial qualities.
