ABSTRACT

Over the past three decades, China’s rapid economic growth has led to the contamination and degradation of most rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and waterways. Poor sewage systems, industrial spills, and the extensive use of agricultural fertilisers and pesticides have been major contributors to the country’s water pollution woes. Some experts contend that efforts to tackle China’s water pollution problems will take longer, will be more expensive, and, ultimately, more difficult to fix than its air pollution problem.
