ABSTRACT

Performing the same series of steps with a different set of dynamics will change the feeling tone of the movement. A dancer may choose to perform a grand adagio with delicate fluidity, conveying perhaps a gentle and serene attitude, or that dancer may perform the same adagio with a controlled and firm quality in order to convey a feeling of boldness or determination. Use of dynamic cueing in the technique classroom is commonplace among ballet educators. Deepening dynamism explores one of the many tools teachers used to teach movement dynamics: Effort. Effort is a primary area of study within Laban/Bartenieff Movement Analysis (L/BMA). It is a comprehensive "map" for movement dynamics. All dancers must eventually develop a unique dancing style and artistic identity. Challenging dancers to make conscious performance choices about their use of movement dynamics in the technique classroom is one way to develop artistry.
