ABSTRACT

Aid agencies were desperate to get better coverage that would in turn encourage American intervention in the crisis. They persuaded government officials in Washington to release to the media a selection of images taken by satellites and Navy aircraft. There is an increasing wave of claims about the potential for drones to intervene in humanitarian crisis, of which their use by the media is one part. A key rationale for the use of drones in warfare is their perceived ability to strike surgically while minimising unwanted casualties. The summer of 2015 saw the largest movement of people in Europe since the end of the Second World War. Political instability, climate change, economic collapse and war led to a huge influx of migrants to the continent. It was a complex, long-running story and one where drones were deployed repeatedly by the media.
