ABSTRACT

In financial terms the focus of drones in education remains at universities with research through aeronautical centres. Looking at the experiences of teachers who have tried to introduce drones into the classroom, there remain structural hurdles to getting the most from the technology. Indeed it is only in 2016 that the first handbook on teaching drones was published and that is more aimed at high schools. The experimentation outside of the classroom has not been matched by the development of sustainable or tested procedures for teaching it inside the classroom. When the House of Lords' European Union Committee reported in 2015 on the civilian use of drones in the European Union it covered a huge range of areas – but barely universities. Committee members visited Cranfield University to look at its pioneering research and teaching on drones, including how they are being deployed for investigations into emergency incidents.
