ABSTRACT

After the conclusion of the fi rst case study, this chapter analyses the Danube River as a second case study. The Danube River is an important river traversing Central and Eastern Europe and is closely linked to European expansion and integration in recent decades. This chapter starts with highlighting the political, economic as well as ecological importance of the Danube region and the stakes of the riparian states. Power relations in the river basin are closely linked to the industrial development of the riparian countries and historical context, as can be seen between Germany and Austria on the upstream of the Danube in comparison to the former Yugoslavia and Romania on the downstream.
