ABSTRACT

Good nutrition means avoiding junk food, and eating healthy foods in the right combinations. To make healthy choices, children need to identify foods which are good for them, and know how to combine them to make nutritionally balanced meals. In the first topic, young children are encouraged to reflect on their eating habits, and are introduced to the importance of fruit and vegetables. Obesity is a common problem, estimated to affect around one in every four adults and about one in every five children aged 10 to 11 in the UK. People who are obese are clinically overweight, and this can cause health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, breast cancer, bowel cancer and stroke. Obesity can also affect a persons quality of life leading to mental health problems such as low self-esteem and depression. Nutritionists use their knowledge of the science of food to help individuals and groups make the right choices about what they eat.
