ABSTRACT

The triple helix model suggests that the interaction of institutional spheres will induce non-linearity, crossover, and co-evolution. This process can be seen in a university incubator facility that transcends its origins as a site for faculty spin-offs by taking in firms from outside the university, typically based on a business concept utilizing existing technology in a new way. A Technopole is typically a government-sponsored organization created to foster high-tech development in a city or region. In the strong sense of the concept, a Technopole is an organization with the resources to undertake initiatives on its own. A more modest version of a Technopole may provide a forum to bring local actors together to discuss possible initiatives. An initial step toward the entrepreneurial university is often the creation of a technology transfer office as an internal search mechanism to identify commercializable technology and as an external search mechanism to identify potential customers.
