ABSTRACT

This chapter provides essential balance to the student-centric model by focusing on a call for institutional responsibility and identifies institutional models or templates for best serving the goal of Black women college student success. It presents practical tools for assisting institutions that are keen on assuming appropriate responsibility for the success of Black women students. The chapter discusses a practice called equity-minded organizational learning to aid institutions with the task of institutional self-evaluation. It argues that Black women leaders are needed to help shape inclusive organizational cultures for all students, including Black women. The chapter also identifies historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) as a source for institutional models that serve Black women college students successfully. It appears that HBCUs provide a better broad-spectrum alternative to predominantly White institutions for Black students, holistic success, instead of a narrowly constructed definition of success.
