ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book recaps and integrates the main arguments posed throughout and considers what's next for the application of psychology to fashion. It discusses how fashion as a discipline is concerned with sensory perception, attention, memory, creativity and communication. The book provides a brief history of fashion and illustrates the long history of clothing for function and decoration, as a means of differentiation and belonging. It also discusses the radical changes brought by the Industrial Revolution and considers the current concept of fashion as a cultural and social phenomenon, as exemplified in social groups and subcultures. The book illustrates how body dissatisfaction is an issue throughout the lifespan for many women and increasingly for men. It shows how we come to know ourselves through the process of socialisation and how this is instrumental in our self-concept.
