ABSTRACT

The previous chapter focused on the key success factors related to operating sport facilities, as well as running sport events. Those concepts, while vital to success, are only attainable when a solid strategic planning process is employed. Strategic planning involves the creation of a comprehensive and integrated plan that is designed to look at the long-term projections of an organisation. It starts with gaining a complete understanding of the current situation of the organisation, and how that information has a direct effect on the overall strategic planning process. This includes creating a coherent mission for an organisation, assessing its internal operational strengths and weaknesses, evaluating their external opportunities and threats, generating relevant goals and objectives, crafting an appropriate organisational structure to move the organisation forward, and developing an action plan to implement the process.
