ABSTRACT

This chapter gives a brief overview of the course as a background and context for student design projects, followed by a small selection of design schemes developed by the students. This was 'Zero Carbon Speculation' work, in which we used Mars as an extreme representation for designing on Earth. The student design schemes presented in this chapter are from the second-term modules. The student design schemes presented in the chapter illustrate different approaches by three different students in few different climates. The chapter includes designs in the hot and humid climates of Thailand, Bahrain and Brazil, and in the temperate oceanic climate of England. It demonstrates how we can expand methods to other worlds, where zero energy rather than zero carbon design could be more meaningful. The procedure for synthesising a weather data file for Mars can be applied to any location on Earth where we would like to use data from on-site monitoring in a simulation analysis.
