ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at local environment or site issues. It learns how to find information about intensity and direction of prevailing wind from weather data, and how to mitigate its effect on a building. The chapter also learns about a sun path diagram and how to use it to design site geometry. It investigates how to control solar gain using orientation and reflective surfaces, and how to analyse overshadowing and a potential for daylighting. The chapter investigates optimum orientation using a dynamic simulation experiment and check whether this rule of thumb is correct. However, choosing the orientation on the basis of simulation experiments rather than rules of thumb is highly recommended, as different latitudes and different site configurations will have different optimum angles. Solar radiation reflects from the water and delivers an increased amount of energy to fruit plantation, making the fruit sweeter and of better quality in comparison with those regions which do not benefit from the same effect.
