ABSTRACT

In 2008 Peter Rosen received the National Press Photographers Association’s Best of Photojournalism Award for Reporting.

That same year, he lost his job. “They laid off a bunch of us,” Rosen recalls. “It was a difficult time for a lot

of people.” Rosen had worked at KUTV in Salt Lake City for nearly two decades,

developing a tremendous reputation as a feature reporter with a knack for creative, unorthodox storytelling. But when the national economy went south, amidst already lean times for local TV news departments, Rosen became a casualty. He remained unemployed two years later, scratching together a set of freelance gigs as a commercial producer and editor but unable to find a full-time job as a traditional reporter.
