Roughly a year into my first job in local TV news, I sat in front of my computer one night facing a journalist’s two worst enemies:

A blank screen and a looming deadline. But the screen was not in my newsroom, and the deadline was not for a

newscast. I was sitting at home, staring with bloodshot eyes at the computer in my bedroom. My deadline? The clock had just struck midnight, and I needed to, at some point, go to sleep.
