ABSTRACT

A group interacts in order to solve a group problem. A group problem consists of the stimuli presented to the group that must be processed by the group until a solution is developed. A task process is the response sequence of a group following the presentation of a group problem. A group will maintain a structure as long as it remains efficient. The structures corresponding to each group milestone are reached in some sequence. The sequence of reached milestones determines the task process of a group. The efficiency of a group is based upon a concept which defines efficiency as the ratio of useful output to input. In the case of an interacting group, the input consists of messages and the useful output is correct solutions to group problems. Groups with an efficiency-related goal and scarce resources tend to organize to become more efficient, and, once they become efficient, to maintain the organization.
