ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to provide an end run around the many concepts and usages of the word “structure” by defining it in such a manner that most usages become special cases. Each different dimension results in an adjective being placed before the noun “structure” as in the cases of “personality” structure, “latent” structure, and “network” structure. The entities may represent concepts of a theory as in the phrase “theoretical structure”. All concepts of structure have at their core a notion of a set of related entitles. The information lost by “crunching” structural data until they are no longer structural but scalar has also made it almost impossible to relate the studies of structure to psychological processes which may, in some way, be affected by structure or affect structure. The all-channel network is typically interpreted as being a democratic and equalitarian structure. It is possible for a structure which appears to be an all-channel to be ruthlessly authoritarian.
