ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how teachers take a step back from framing the book for students, leading discussions and overall, being an authority on the text. The reading workshop is about students gaining the capacity to read beyond the classroom. Part of reading workshop is offering a variety of ways to engage with a text and then encouraging them to select what works best for them. Independent reading is the foundation of the reading workshop because it encourages and supports autonomy. Teachers organize book groups in different ways: all groups read the same novel; groups read different novels within a theme; and groups read different novels with no particular theme. The Belgians' attempts to make legible the land and people of Rwanda set the stage for a series of genocides and political unrest. The legacy of genocide persists as Rwanda lives and relives the memory of genocide with each year's commemoration of the genocide.
